Think Before You Act

My mom used to tell me that I should think before I speak. (I had a tendency to say things without thinking how someone else would respond. Thankfully, I’m pretty much past that stage now.) As communicators, we need to think before we act.

Someone is probably telling you that you need to start a blog. Or, you need to create a Facebook page. (It’s all the rage, right?) Or, you need to try this bell or that whistle. Well, they may be right … or they may be wrong. If you don’t know what you’re trying to accomplish, how do you know what tools to use?

Have you read Groundswell yet? It advocates for a strategic approach to your social media strategy. Here’s how it works:


First, think about the people. Who is your audience and what tools are they using? Then, consider your objectives. What are you trying to accmplish? Create a straetgy to achieve those goals and then determine what technology to incorporate.

Taking a systeatic approach like this will help you get the most out of your limited resources. How are you approaching your social media activities?
